Metabolic syndrome - Symptoms and causes
What is metabolic syndrome?
''It is a complex of metabolic disorders, which indicates that a person has an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes''. The reason for it is poor tissue susceptibility to the action of insulin. Treatment of it is a low-carbohydrate diet and exercise therapy.
Insulin is the "key" that opens the "doors" on the cell membrane, and through them, glucose enters from inside the blood. As it in blood at the patient, the level of sugar (glucose) and insulin rise in blood. However, glucose is not enough to enter cells, because "the lock rusts," and insulin loses its ability to open. Such a metabolic disorder is called insulin resistance, that is, the excessive resistance of the body tissues to the action of insulin. It usually develops gradually and leads to symptoms that diagnose it. It's good if the diagnosis can be put on time so that treatment can manage to prevent diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
Diagnosis:
Many international medical organizations are developing criteria for diagnosing it in patients. In 2009, the document "Harmonization of the Definition of the Metabolic Syndrome" was published, under which were subscribed: National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the United States; World Health Organization; International Society of Atherosclerosis; International Association for the Study of Obesity.
According to this document, it is diagnosed if the patient has at least three of the criteria listed below:
An increase in the circumference (in men> = 94 cm, in women> = 80 cm); The level of triglycerides in the blood exceeds 1.7 mmol / l or the patient is already receiving medications for the treatment of dyslipidemia; Lipoproteins of high density (HDL, "good" cholesterol) in the blood - less than 1.0 mmol / L in men and below 1.3 mmol / L in women; Systolic (upper) blood pressure exceeds 130 mm Hg. Art. or diastolic (lower) arterial pressure exceeds 85 mm Hg. v. or the patient is already taking medicine for hypertension; The fasting blood glucose level> = 5.6 mmol / l, or the therapy is used to reduce blood sugar.
Before the emergence of new criteria for diagnosing the metabolic syndrome, obesity was a prerequisite for the diagnosis. Now it has become only one of five principles. Diabetes mellitus and coronary heart disease are not components of it, but severe independent illnesses. Treatment: the responsibility of the doctor and the patient Objectives of treatment of it: a decrease in body weight to a reasonable level, or at least a halt in the progression of obesity; normalization of arterial pressure, cholesterol profile, triglyceride level in the blood, i.e., correction of cardiovascular risk factors. To cure the metabolic syndrome - for today it is impossible. But you can control it well to live a long healthy life without diabetes, heart attack, stroke, etc. If a person has this problem, then her therapy needs to be spent on survival. An essential component of the treatment is the training of the patient and his motivation to switch to a healthy lifestyle. The primary treatment for metabolic syndrome is diet. The practice has shown that it is useless even to try to adhere to some of the "hungry" menus. You will inevitably sooner or later come off, and excess weight will immediately return. We recommend that you use a low-carbohydrate diet to control the metabolic syndrome.
Additional measures for the treatment of metabolic syndrome: Increased physical activity - this improves the sensitivity of tissues to insulin; refusal to smoke and excessive consumption of alcohol; regular measurement of blood pressure and treatment of hypertension, if it occurs; control indicators of "good" and "bad" cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose in the blood. We also advise you to take an interest in medicine called metformin (sophomore, Glucophage). Since the late 1990s, it has been used to increase the sensitivity of cells to insulin. This drug is of great benefit to patients with obesity and diabetes. And to date, he had no side effects, more severe than episodic cases of indigestion.
Most people who have been diagnosed with it is remarkably helped by the restriction of carbohydrates in the diet. When a person goes on a low-carbohydrate diet, one can expect that he has: a reasonable level of triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood; blood pressure will decrease; he will lose weight.
But if the low-carbohydrate diet and physical activity increase do not work well, then together with a doctor you can add metformin to them. In the most severe cases, when the patient has a body mass index> 40 kg / m2, surgical treatment of obesity is also used. It is called bariatric surgery. How to normalize cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood With metabolic syndrome, patients usually have poor blood test results for cholesterol and triglycerides. "Good" cholesterol in the blood is not enough, and "bad" is increased on the contrary. Also raised the level of triglycerides. All this means that the vessels are affected by atherosclerosis, heart attack or stroke just around the corner. Blood tests for cholesterol and triglycerides are collectively referred to as the "lipid spectrum." Doctors like to talk and write, they say, I'm sending you to take tests for the lipid spectrum. Or worse - the lipid spectrum is unfavorable. Now you will know what it is. To improve the results of blood tests for cholesterol and triglycerides, doctors usually prescribe a low-calorie diet and statin drugs. At the same time they make an original appearance, try to look impressive and convincing. However, an omnivorous diet does not help at all, but the pills help but cause significant side effects. Yes, statins improve the results of blood tests for cholesterol.
But do they lower the mortality rate - it's not a fact ... there are different opinions ... However, you can solve the problem of cholesterol and triglycerides without harmful and expensive tablets. And, it can be easier than you think. Low-calorie diet usually does not normalize cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Moreover, in some patients, the results of tests even worse. This is because the fat-free "hungry" diet is overloaded with carbohydrates. Under the action of insulin carbohydrates, which you eat, turn into triglycerides. But these very triglycerides I would like to have in my bloodless. Your body does not tolerate carbohydrates, which is why the metabolic syndrome developed. If you do not take measures, then it will go smoothly into type 2 diabetes or suddenly break with a cardiovascular catastrophe. A low-carbohydrate diet solves the problem of triglycerides and cholesterol. Triglycerides level in the blood is normalized after 3-4 days of its compliance! Hand over the tests - and see it for yourself. Cholesterol improves later, after 4-6 weeks. Take blood tests for cholesterol and triglycerides before starting a "new life," and then again. Make sure that the low-carbohydrate diet helps! Simultaneously, it normalizes blood pressure. This is the real prevention of heart attack and stroke and without a painful sense of hunger. Supplements from stress and for the heart are an excellent supplement to the diet. They cost money, but expenses pay off because you will feel much more cheerful.
